Allen B. Smith, age 66, of McHenry, died Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Centegra Hospital-McHenry.
He was born May 21, 1948 in Kokomo, IN, to Bernell and Nora J. (Hawk) Smith. On March 9, 1974, he married Kristine Hofstetter at Atonement Lutheran Church in San Diego, CA.
After graduating from high school in Kokomo, Allen was employed by Western Electric for several years before enlisting with the U.S. Navy. He served as a communication specialist for 20 years before being discharged as an E-6. After discharge, Allen was employed by Atlas Copco in Mundelein and later by Lucent Technology for ten years. Prior to retirement from his communications career in 2001, Allen worked for North Point Communication.
Allen was a longtime member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in McHenry. He was also a lifetime member and past commander of the V.F.W. Post 11496.
Allen was a dedicated family man, and enjoyed going on road trips, shopping trips and fishing trips with his family. He had a passion for cooking, and loved to host barbecues to get together with his friends and neighbors. Always willing to help others, Allen was active with the Boy Scouts of America in Kokomo while he was growing up, and the Johnsburg Boy Scouts Troop 455 from 1987 to 1994 when his sons were scouts. Allen was an avid nature lover, and was very supportive of projects supporting the preservation of nature.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kristine; three children, LeAnna (Paul) Anderson, Brian (Cindy) Smith, Lisa (Karter) Rich; and four grandchildren, Trevor, Abigail, Aric and Lucy.
In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by a son, Daniel, in 1998; two grandchildren, Keegan and Richie; and a brother, Burnell “Bobby” Smith Jr.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2015, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will resume from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 N. Green Street, McHenry, IL 60050. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at church.
Interment will be in Ringwood Cemetery, Ringwood, IL.
