A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara Jean Pokorney passed away on January 11, 2022, at the age of 86, in her home.
Born on January 9, 1936, in Chicago, IL, Barbara came from a large and loving Italian family. Despite being an only child, she had plenty of cousins to play with. As an adult she lived in Ingleside, IL, for 54 years until her passing.
Barbara met her husband, Donald, while in school. He was her protector and provider, and she was devastated when he passed eight years ago. Of the two, she was the disciplinarian when it came to the kids.
Bubbly and good-natured, Barbara was a kind soul who enjoyed teaching others her many homemaking skills. From stuffing homemade Polish sausages to canning and cooking Italian cuisine, she taught her daughters and her daughter-in-law an array of useful trades. She loved entertaining and had many close friends.
An avid gardener and amateur horticulturist, she and her husband spent years rearing beautiful, exotic orchids. She also enjoyed boating, Wave Running and spending time with her family – particularly the grandkids.
She is survived by her son Mark (Julie) Pokorney and daughter Laura Drennah; grandchildren
Tim (Kerri) Pokorney, Danelle (Luke) Monroe, Emily, Greg, Amanda, Kylie and Kendyl Bigony.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Donald F. Pokorney; daughter Debra Luce Bigony Piccolo; and son Scott Pokorney.
Above all, Barbara had a big heart and was well loved. In the words of George Sand: “There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.”
