Bruce Warren Klontz, longtime McHenry resident and local businessman, died peacefully early Thursday morning, September 27, 2007 at his home. He was 86, and had been in declining health recently.
He was born in Richmond, IL on June 22, 1921, the son of Dr. Clayton W. and Lulu M. (Swanson) Klontz. His father moved his family and medical practice to McHenry in January of 1926 when, as Mr. Klontz often later recalled, it had but one paved road, one stop sign and the Old Mill Pond was still intact. He made McHenry his home for more than 80 years, interrupted only by college and military service.
Mr. Klontz is a graduate of McHenry schools, obtained an Electrical Engineering degree from Chicago Technical College in 1943 and then joined the US Navy. While serving his country during World War II, he married the former Matilda “Mitzi” Zatlow on January 6, 1945, in Washington DC. Immediately after the war, the couple returned to McHenry where they founded McHenry Electric & Supply Company and McHenry Music Center.
He was a volunteer firefighter in McHenry for over 22 years, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600.
He is survived by six children, Bryan W. (Sharon) Klontz of Greenville, SC, Bryce C. (Jan) Klontz of Richmond, Randall E. Klontz of McHenry, Lorilee J. (Thomas) Crnkovich of Downers Grove, Keith W. (Olga) Klontz of Seminole, FL., and Louine A. (Kenneth) Sternickle of Harvard; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice May Reynolds, of Antigo, WI.; and lifetime friend, Elli Reid.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Mitzi on Sept. 19, 1991 and his parents.
Friends may greet the family from 1:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, October 5, 2007, at graveside in Woodland Cemetery.
There service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 5, at graveside with the combined veterans groups of McHenry conducting the prayer service.
