Darrell I. Nielsen, age 95, of Round Lake Park, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017, with his family by his side. He was born April 11, 1922, in Redelm, SD to Harold and Anna (Roed) Nielsen. His high school sweetheart, Eleanor Hueglin, took a train to Corpus Christi, TX, and on August 30, 1943 they were joined in holy matrimony. Their love grew for 70 years, with undying love and devotion to each other.
Darrell proudly served in the US Navy during WWII, as a radar specialist, which he taught to soldiers in Washington DC. For 40 years, from 1945-1985, he was a valued employee for Standard Wire & Steel Works in Chicago. He was a longtime member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church. In Darrell’s leisure time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing at their cabin in Mercer, Wisconsin.
Darrell is survived by his daughter, Sue (Robert) Schenk; four grandchildren, Kimberly Kleckley, Kerri (Kevin) Pratt, Robyn (Matt) Schoeneman, Ryan (Tina) Schenk; six great-grandchildren, Clint, Shelby, Aubrey, Eiley, Taylor, and Josh.
In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor, his son Darrell A. Nielsen, and daughter-in-law Barbara J. Nielsen.
Friends are asked to join his family for a 3 p.m. memorial service on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 510 N. Cedar Lake Road, Round Lake, IL 60073.
Inurnment will be private.
For those wishing to send an expression of sympathy, his family suggests memorials in Darrell’s memory be made to the Calvary Presbyterian Church.
