David Christopher Conaghan, age 74, of McHenry, died Thursday, October 20, 2011, at Centegra Hospital-McHenry surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Feb. 14, 1937 in New York, New York to John S. and Lavinia A. (Gill) Conaghan. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served aboard the USS Newport News.
Raised and educated in New York, David met his wife, Diane Tross of Chicago, in Florida and later married at St. Pascal Catholic Church on October 22, 1966. They moved to New York, where they lived for 10 years. In 1976, they returned to live in Carpentersville, and in 1978, they became residents of McHenry.
David started his career with The Holmes Company in New York and upon moving to Illinois furthered his career with Honeywell (Alarm Division) where he later became Installation Supervisor. David received many awards throughout his career with Honeywell. After retiring from Honeywell after 20 years, he then came on board with his son Steven’s business (Securetron Alarm) where he helped with many aspects of the business for nearly 10 years.
He enjoyed traveling and camping with his family, spending afternoons on his pontoon boat, car restoration, reading books, and stamp collecting. He was always meticulous with his lawn. He was a loving and devoted husband and dad.
David was a member of the C.A.A.T.S. Car Club, the Huntley Stamp Club and participated in the Trail of History. He was also a long-time member of St. Mary’s Church in McHenry.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Diane; four children, Steven Conaghan of Wonder Lake, Linda (Brian) Keith of Wonder Lake, Brian (Patty) Conaghan of Fox Lake, and Douglas (Peggy) Conaghan of McHenry; three grandchildren, Stephanie Conaghan, Amber Keith, and Sarah Conaghan; two sisters, Cecelia (William) Stapleton of North Carolina, and Sara Jo (Richard) Mosier of New Jersey; his mother-in-law, Virginia (late Elmer) Tross of McHenry; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will resume Thursday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until leaving at 10:30 a.m. for the funeral Mass.
The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 1401 N. Richmond Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, McHenry.
