Donald J. Luby, age 83, of Round Lake, died Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
He was born June 24, 1929 in Waukegan to Clarence James and Edna (Curran) Luby. On June 18, 1984, he married Martha “Marty” Kobernick at St. Joseph’s Church in Round Lake.
A lifetime resident of Round Lake, Don worked as custodian of St. Joseph Church & School for 35 years, retiring at age 62.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Don served his country during the Korean War. He also served his community as Police Commissioner for Round Lake, and as a longtime member of the Round Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
An avid woodworker, Don was an enthusiastic fan of the Sox and the Packers. He loved to be outside, and enjoyed gardening and yardwork. After acquiring his tractor, he even developed an enjoyment for mowing. Known as “Grandpa Don” around the neighborhood, Don was a quiet and gentle man with an infectious laugh. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Marty; seven children, Constance (John) Oaf of McHenry, Donald (Karen) Luby of Ingleside, Timothy (Jacque) Luby of Monticello, IN, Jack (Theresa) Kobernick of Lyons, WI, Patricia (Randy) Stey of Grayslake; Kim (Karen) Kobernick of Grayslake, and Mark (Iyrna) Kobernick of Charlotte, NC; 14 grandchildren, Robert, Jessica (Michael), Amanda, Melissa, Paul, Diana (Matthew), Katlin, John, Erin (Loren), Beth (Shane), Clay, Clif, Kelly, and Emily; 6 great-grandchildren, Cody, Claire, Dana, Evan, Cadence, and Lane.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Winifred Marie Luby in 1980; a sister, Eleanor Freitag; and a son in infancy.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Justen’s Round Lake Funeral Home, 222 N. Rosedale Court, Round Lake, IL 60073.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013, at St. Joseph Church, 114 Lincoln Avenue, Round Lake, IL 60073.
Interment will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Libertyville.
