Dora Smith, age 80, of McHenry, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. She was at home surrounded by her family.
She was born August 31, 1930, in Crystal Lake to Ernest and Minna (Flotow) Timm. She grew up there and was part of a close-knit family of fourteen brothers and sisters. At the early age of eight, Dora was a mother’s helper for a neighborhood family. Her wages helped support their large family.
On May 15, 1948 she married Harold Smith in Crystal Lake. They lived and worked with Harold’s family on a farm in the Johnsburg area. Later, they bought their first home in McCullom Lake where they lived for many years until retiring to a condo in McHenry.
Dora was a devoted homemaker who worked tirelessly, caring for their home and six children. She was a loving mother, doting grandmother, and playful great-grandmother. Her greatest joy was being around her family. She was a talented artist and enjoyed sewing, baking, reading, arts and crafts and listening to music. Dora had a deep faith in Christ throughout her entire life.
She is survived by five daughters, Katherine Hovseth of McHenry, Patricia Hawkins of Harvard, Deborah Montrose of Sugar Grove, Jennifer Blair of Richmond, Jacqueline (Luis) Rivera of Rolling Meadows; thirteen grandchildren, Robin (Robert) Powers, Michael Hovseth, Brian (Marcy) Hovseth, Jason Hovseth, Richard Hawkins, Scott Hawkins, Sheila Roberts, Emily Montrose, Ian Montrose, Jacqueline Blair, Christine Blair, Ryan Tamoj, Giovanni Rivera; six great grandchildren, Alyssa, Wyatt, Steven, Riley, Brandon, Nathan; two brothers, Carl and Richard; and four sisters Greta, Clara, Emma and Lucille.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty years, Harold W. Smith, a son, William Smith; her parents, four brothers Vernon, Ernest, Otto and Fred; and three sisters Erna, Helen and Shirley.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
Visitation will continue on Monday, February 14, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 North Green Street, McHenry, IL.
Inurnment will be in Woodland Cemetery, McHenry.
