Gail Lee Szamlewski, age 71, of McHenry, died Monday, October 5, 2009 at Holy Family Medical Center, Des Plaines.
She was born January 14, 1938 in Chicago to Harold and Genevieve (Bissell) Mays.
Formerly of Chicago, Gail had been a resident of McHenry since 1964. A homemaker the majority of her life, her family was most important to her.
She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Unit 4600 which she had once served as President. She also helped with the catering of luncheons and dinners.
Gail enjoyed her frequent trips to casinos; had a passion for cooking and loved collecting recipes. She was an avid fan of the food channel and loved to read.
She is survived by her five children, Richard (Marilyn) Szamlewski of Cary, Michael (Lynne) Szamlewski of McHenry, Karen (Nick) Toci of McHenry, Jeffrey (Lori) Szamlewski of McHenry, Scott (Sandy) Szamlewski of McHenry; fourteen grandchildren, Jason (Nicole) Szamlewski, Sharon (Joseph) Spencer, Melissa (George) Kozlowski, Stephanie Szamlewski, Michael (Sharleen) Szamlewski Jr., Jacob Everett, Cassandra Everett, Nicole Toci, Corey, Taylor and Kevin Szamlewski, Ryan, Marc and Bradley Szamlewski; ten great grandchildren, Madisyn, Nicholas, Lucas, Paityn, Branden, Trevor, Cahleb, Alexia, Devin, Joseph; a sister, Carol (the late John) Krauss of Frankfort; a sister-in-law, Florence Mays of Lake-In-The-Hills; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman on October 24, 1996; her father, Harry Mays; mother, Genevieve Dahl; two brothers, Ronald Mays and Kenneth Mays; and a granddaughter, Krystyne.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Justen Funeral Home & crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, Il 60050.
The funeral service will be friday morning at the funeral home.
Inurnment will be in Windridge Memorial Park Cemetery.
