George John “the Gipper” Giersz, 91, of Glendale Heights, passed into Glory on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Bickford of St. Charles. He was born March 9, 1927, to Michael and Harriet (nee Zdzieblowski) Giersz. Originally from Chicago, George was a long-time resident of Glendale Heights (and Carol Stream). He was a quality control associate for Ma Bell (now Verizon) until he retired in May, 1984. He was a regular attender of Lamplighter Bible Church.
George enjoyed watching CNN, reading newspapers and monitoring the stock market. For many years, he was a season ticket holder for his favorite sports teams, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.
George is survived by his five nephews, Joseph Sroczynski, Robert (Mary) Urbaniak, Paul (Laura) Giersz, Kenneth Giersz and Richard Giersz; two nieces, Christine (Ronald) Courtin and Janice (Joseph) Ryan; and sister-in-law, Stephanie Giersz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Edna (as a child), Anna (Fred) Urbaniak, Mary Josephine (James) Leahy, Rosalie Giersz; brothers, Harry Giersz (in infancy), Joseph Giersz, Michael (Anne) Giersz and William Giersz; and a nephew, Ron Sroczynski.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Justen Funeral Home, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, Illinois 60050. The funeral service for George John Giersz, will be celebrated at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home. His nephew, The Rev. Paul Giersz, will officiate.
Interment will be at the St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Johnsburg.
