George O. Miner Sr., age 68, of Round Lake Beach, was taken by cancer Thursday, January 30, 2014, at his home. He was born June 14, 1945, in Scranton, PA, to Herbert B. and Emma Jean (Carney) Miner. Raised in Pennsylvania, George graduated from Tunkhannock High School in 1964.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in Vietnam aboard the LST-1077.
He was a longtime resident of the Round Lake area. George enjoyed a 32-year career with American Hospital Supply through acquisitions and spinoffs which transitioned the company to Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Allegiance Corporation, most recently Cardinal Health Inc.
George was a member of St. Joseph Church in Round Lake for many years, where he enjoyed working at bingo games. He was also the co-founder of Cub Scout Pack 175 at St. Joseph. George’s love of scouting has been carried on through his children and grandchildren who remain involved with scouting. He was especially proud of his oldest son, George Jr., and grandson, Alex, for attaining the level of Eagle Scout.
He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Lake Villa.
Proud of all his children and grandchildren and all that they accomplished, George was always there with the biggest smile for each and everyone as he watched or learned of the things they did. His overwhelming support for his family was seen by all who knew him.
He and his wife, Jo, enjoyed crafting. He liked to meet new people and talk with them while selling his “twirlies”. Later his son, George Jr., and his wife joined them at craft shows. They never made much, but together they enjoyed each show because of the people. In addition to his family, crafting, and woodworking, George loved to get away to his boyhood home in Pennsylvania. Many, many good times were spent there. He also loved the companionship of his dog, Buddie.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jo, and their four children, George Jr. (Rhonda) Miner, Jean (David) Vandergriff, Laura (Jeffrey Lipp) Miner, and Paul (Karen) Miner; grandchildren, Joey (Nicole Patrillo), Matt, Alex, Elizabeth, Kayla, Nicky, Patrick, Chris, Jared (Mitzi), and Zach; two great-grandchildren, Selah, and the newest addition to the family six weeks ago, Noah Joseph. He is also survived by his brother, Patrick (Connie) Miner and their children, Andrew and Amanda; his sister-in-law, Pauline (Ron) Moon, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins; and more friends than can be mentioned.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
