Geraldine M. Hopp, age 78, of Johnsburg, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 6, 1936 in Chicago to John and Anne (McDonough) Dwyer. On April 27, 1957, she married William “Jake” Hopp in Chicago.
Formerly of Chicago, Geraldine was a resident of Johnsburg for the past 35 years. She led a busy life as a devoted wife and mother who always had an open door at her home, welcoming extended family and friends throughout the years. During her lifetime, Geraldine’s work life varied from working the concessions at Comisky Park for ten years, to being a travel agent, then working at the former McHenry Hospital for many years,first in food service and later in the Billing Department, and lastly working at the McHenry Township Assessor’s office.
Her greatest enjoyment in life was being surrounded by her family. She loved visitors to her home, as well as bowling and playing cards with family and friends. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout leader while raising her children, and adored being a part of her grandchildrens’ lives. She loved getting together with her grandchildren before the holidays to bake Christmas cookies.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg.
Survivors include three sons, William (Janet) Hopp of Chicago, John (Betsy) Hopp of McHenry, and James (Lisa) Hopp of Johnsburg; three daughters, Beth (Ed) Carey of McHenry, Ginger White of Johnsburg, and Marikay (Bill) Gebis of Johnsburg; 15 grandchildren, Patrick Hopp, Ashley (Chris) Nugarus, Kailey, Megan, Sarah, Miranda, Whitney, Samantha, Hayden, Nolan, Travis, Morgan, Ryan, Jake, and Cassie; and two great-grandchildren, Lilly & Hannah.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, William, on November 29, 1996.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2015, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will resume Tuesday at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. prayers, before leaving for the 10 a.m. funeral mass at St. John the Baptist Church, Johnsburg. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Johnsburg.
Her family suggests memorials to the Alzheimers Association or to the American Cancer Society.
