Gilbert Chamberlin Hegy, age 95, of McHenry, died Thursday, November 13, 2008, at Reflections Memory Care at McHenry Retirement Community.
Gilbert, affectionately known as “Gil”, was born May 8, 1913 in Milwaukee to Frank and Ethel (nee Chamberlin) Hegy. The family settled on a farm north of Hartford in 1915. He married Josephine Mary Brown (nee Josephine Hulita) on March 30, 1937
Formerly of Hartford, Wisconsin, Gil moved to McHenry in 2002. He attended Parks Air College for 2 years from 1933 until 1935, which is now part of the University of St. Louis. He was employed for 40 years, 1935-1975, with American Airlines as a mechanic and later General Foreman, working in Buffalo, NY and Chicago. In honor of Mr. Hegy’s contribution to our nation’s aviation heritage, his name is permanently inscribed on a “Wall of Honor” at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport, Va.
Gil was a sports enthusiast and particularly enjoyed bowling and golf. Living in the Chicago area for much of his life, he was a great supporter of his Bears, Cubs, and White Sox. He also enjoyed neighborhood card games and gardening with his wife. Music was important to him and he never tired of the “big band” sound, especially Guy Lombardo.
Gil is survived by a son, David (Phyllis) of Crystal Lake, a daughter Sheila of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Michael (Angela), Deborah (Rob), Christopher (Sausan), David (Sally), Todd, and Anne. He also is survived by great-grandchildren; Jacob, Brandon, Michael, Ismail, Zachary, Elissa, Natalie and Sophia, along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine, and his son-in-law, William Laird Kleine-Ahlbrandt.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Gilbert will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 21, at St. Kilian Catholic Church, Hartford, Wisconsin. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
Interment will be in St. Kilian Cemetery, Hartford.
