Hans W. Eilrich, age 87, of Round Lake Beach, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Born Feb. 25, 1922 in Hohenfelde, Germany to Fritz Karl and Hedwig Louise (Roeske) Eilrich, Hans immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island at the age of 3, and settled in Chicago with his family. He graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1941.
From 1942 until 1945, he proudly served in the U.S. Army in Italy and North Africa during World War II, achieving the rank of corporal. He returned to Chicago, and on Sept. 6, 1947, he was united in marriage with Helen Thompson.
As a young man, he worked at American Can Company. After attending the Art Institute, he worked as a commercial artist, and was employed for many years at Caspers Tin Plate in Chicago.
He enjoyed making bird houses, gardening, and spending time outdoors.
Survivors include three children, John (Lois) Eilrich of Schaumburg, Jennifer (Rick) Evert of Round Lake Beach, and Tim (Denise) Eilrich of Schaumburg; six grandchildren, Daniel (Jeanette) Evert, Jeff (fiancee Crystal Walton) Eilrich, Peter Eilrich, Scott Eilrich, Cassidy Eilrich, and Russel Eilrich; a brother, Fred (Elsie) Eilrich of Wheeling.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Helen, on April 13, 2001.
Friends are invited to join the family at a memorial service to be held Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 285 Washington Street, Grayslake 60030. Interim Pastor Fred Hill will officiate.
Inurnment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
