Harold J. Hegg Sr., age 92, of McHenry, died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Hospice of Northeastern Illinois in Woodstock.
He was born November 1, 1919 in Chicago to Ernest and Anna (TenBruin) Hegg. On November 7, 1946 he married Florence Helena Lawson.
He was a veteran of WWII serving as a 1st Sgt in the Army.
Born and raised in Chicago, Harold moved to McHenry in 1976. Prior to WWII Harold was called up to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was employed with the J.B. Noelle Painting Company, as a painter and decorator for over 50 years retiring in 1981.
He was a Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He also enjoyed camping, singing songs around the campfire and was an avid horseshoe player. He was best known for his sense of humor, telling jokes and his great wit and great attitude.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Florence; children, Harold J. (Joyce) Hegg Jr, Bruce Hegg, Karen (Earl) Epps, Nancy (Len) Harwell, Jean (Dave) Johnson, Donna (Ed) Snyder, Joy (Norm) Eichmann; 28 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Patrick and Ruth Envall.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Harold J. Hegg Jr., Gary in infancy; and a daughter, Charlene Hegg.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
The memorial service will be at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, at the funeral home.
Inurnment will be private in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood.
