Harvey V. Palmer, age 91, of Johnsburg, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at his home.
Born March 27, 1922 in Oak Park, Harvey was the son of Harvey V. and Violet (Hilmer) Palmer. On November 14, 1943, he married Wanda G. Jepsen at Ivanhoe Church in Mundelein.
Raised and educated in Crystal Lake, Harvey served his country during World War II with the
U.S. Army Air Corp 13th Air Cargo Resupply Squadron in the Philippines. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two bronze battle stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, a good conduct medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career in the tool and die industry, working at Auto-Lite in Woodstock. Prior to retiring at age 63 from Auto-Lite, he and his wife Wanda realized a life-long dream by building and founding their business, Palmer’s Four Seasons Gift Shop in Johnsburg, in 1973. The store was a family operation, and Harvey loved the interaction with his customers of all ages. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years doing everything needed at the store, otherwise referred to as his honey-do list. He worked there until the age of 87 when the store closed.
A true gentleman and a wonderful family man, Harvey was always there for his family. If anyone needed anything, Harvey never hesitated to help. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, he will be dearly missed by his entire family.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 70 years, Wanda; three children, Sandra (Richard) Kollenkark of Johnsburg, Linda (Dennis) Petersen of McHenry, and Rocky (Donna) Palmer of McHenry; nine grandchildren, Tami (John) Pawlik, Wayne (Mary) Kollenkark, Shane (Shereen) Petersen, Jason Petersen, Derek Palmer, Hanna Mays, Vaughn Mays, Sarah (Brian) Dulek, and Megan Boyle; eight great-grandchildren, Josh and Ben Pawlik, Luke and Isaac Kollenkark, Ethan and Rilea Petersen, Kierra and Caden Dulek; and a brother, Robert (Patricia) Palmer of Elmwood Park.
