Horace F. “Harry” Brown, age 76, of McHenry, passed away peacefully Friday, October 2, 2015, at his home after a two year battle with cancer.
He was born April 4, 1939 in England to Frederick C. and Margaret E. (O’Connell) Brown. On July 25, 1959 he married his first wife Doreen Hall. After Doreen’s passing Harry married Anne C. Gibson on September 20, 1996 at The Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry.
A resident of McHenry for the past 37 years, Harry also lived in Wisconsin for a year and Connecticut for nine years. He immigrated to the United States from England as a young man with a wife and two children on the Queen Elizabeth II. After the death of Doreen, Harry decided to become an American Citizen.
Harry loved his trade as machinist for his entire career. He worked up until his passing thanks to his friend Steve. He was allowed to pass on his trade skills to younger tradesmen.
He also loved nature to the fullest, was an avid gardener, loved traveling and riding his bicycle and walking. For many years, he rode his bike to work and back (11 miles one way). He enjoyed his 12 o’clock Martini and 4 o’clock cup of tea.
He was a devout Catholic and a member of The Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Anne Gibson; and his four daughters, Alison (Dave) Mercure of McHenry, Bev (Tony) Pennington of McHenry, Caroline (Bill) Balacek of Johnsburg, and Debbie (Mike) Palmer of McHenry; grandchildren, Amber & Nate Mercure, Megan (Andrew) Santi, Eryn & Katy Miller, Melissa (John) Currado, Abby Balacek, Brandon & Collin Palmer; great grandchildren, John Paul Currado, Natalie May, and Theo Santi; his sister, Eileen Healy; and many cousins in England. Harry’s second family include Anne’s children, Jenn (Jon) Appel, Ericka (Brian) Howard, John (Amanda) Gibson and Zach (Jen) Gibson; Grandchildren include; Aidan, Bridget, Brendan, and Fintan Howard, Magnolia Gibson, Danny, Josh and Emmalyn Gibson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Doreen, his sister Margaret (Philip) Rice.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2015, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry, IL 60050. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Interment will be in St. Patrick Countryside Cemetery, McHenry.
