James W. Brooks, age 84, of McHenry, died Friday, May 28, 2010 at Centegra Hospital – McHenry, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born January 18, 1926 in Chicago to Walter and Alice (McAuliffe) Brooks. On August 22, 1953, he married Helen Matthew in Rockford.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served on an LST during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Service affiliations included memberships in the U.S. LST Association and V.F.W. Post 4600 in McHenry.
Mr. Brooks was a resident of McHenry since 1954, and was employed as a truck driver for McHenry Sand & Gravel. Later, he was employed by Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) in Waukegan, first as a truck driver and then in the Shipping and Receiving Office and International Exports. He retired from OMC in 1991.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in McHenry. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed camping, traveling, and participating on several bowling leagues.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen; and five daughters, Theresa Skelly of McHenry, Kathleen (Michael) Whitehead of McHenry, Julie (Scott) Anderson of McHenry, Elizabeth (William) Cudnowski of Appleton, WI, and Barbara Brooks of McHenry; seven grandchildren, Rebecca and Daniel Whitehead, Lauren, Megan, and Brian Anderson, and Katie and Christopher Cudnowski.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son-in-law, Michael Skelly on March 31, 2004.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
Visitation will resume Wednesday, June 2, at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., when prayers will be said before leaving for church. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 3500 W. Washington St. McHenry. Interment will be in St. Patrick Churchyard Cemetery, McHenry.
His family suggests memorials be directed to V.F.W. Post 4600 for the purpose of Veterans Care at the VA-North Chicago.
