John D. Wilkinson, age 62, of McHenry, died Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.
He was born November 25, 1944 in Chicago to John W. and Ruth (Pankonen) Wilkinson. On June 9, 2001, he married Cheryl J. Barnes in Oregon, Illinois.
Formerly of Chicago, John was a resident of McHenry since 1971. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
A career firefighter, he joined the Evanston Fire Department in 1967. In 1972, he became the fire department mechanic, and was promoted to Captain/paramedic in April, 1978. In August, 1992, he became shift commander, followed by Division Chief in December 1994. He became Acting Chief in September, 1996, and attained the position of Fire Chief in October 1998, a position he held until retiring November 26, 2003. He was also one of the original members of the Evanston Water Rescue Team.
He was a volunteer firefighter for McHenry Township Fire Protection District for over 20 years, where he also participated in the under water search and rescue operations.
Enjoyments included fishing, car shows and flea markets, his four canines including three Irish Wolfhounds and a lab/springer. He had recently purchased his dream car, a ‘65 Chevy Cobra.
Survivors include his wife of five years, Cheryl; two children, John A. (Carrie Levesque) Wilkinson of Cary and Kristin Wilkinson of Chicago; and a sister Doris.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006, at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry, IL 60050.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, at McHenry Fire Protection District, Company 2, 3510 Johnsburg/Wilmot Rd, Johnsburg. Friends may gather between 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Inurnment will be private.
