John Michael Sligting, age 56, of Round Lake Beach, died suddenly Wednesday, June 13, 2007, following a motorcycle accident.
He was born April 26, 1951, in Chicago, to William and Amelia (Mollenhauer) Sligting.
He was raised in Franklin Park, where he attended school and met his future wife. On May 2, 1972, he married Carol Hurt in Wheaton, IL.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
A resident of Round Lake Beach for the past 33 years, he was a fireman for most of his career. He was a volunteer member of the Round Lake Fire Department for ten years, where he served as a fire engineer before retirement 15 years ago. He also was a full time fireman for the Great Lakes Naval Base, serving a Fire Captain for almost 25 years. He retired in 2003. After leaving Great Lakes, he worked as Site Manager for the Jones School Bus Co. Most recently, he was a dispatcher/scheduler for PACE in Glenview. He was past-president of IAFF 37 Great Lakes Firefighters Union.
An avid motorcycle enthusiast, John enjoyed taking cross country motorcycle trips with his wife to such destinations as South Dakota and the Smoky Mountains. He was a member of the GWRRA IL G-2 (Gold Wind Road Riders Association) for the last few years, and had been serving as the organization’s Public Relations Coordinator. He was very active with the fund raising the GWRRA did for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Other enjoyments included fishing with his buddy, Dave Janssen; and taking camping trips with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Carol; three children, Charlene (Scott) Eckols of Elgin, Christina Sligting of Round Lake Beach; and Cynthia (Nick) Cooper of South Beloit; four grandchildren, Zachary Schwartz, Crystal and Michael Sligting, Cody Cooper, and twin grandchildren due to arrive in Sept.; a brother, William (Louise) Sligting of McHenry; and a sister, Cathie (Rudy) Jesse of Knox, Indiana.
The visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 pm. Friday, June 15, 2007, at Justen’s Round Lake Funeral Home, 222 N. Rosedale Court (at Cedar Lake Road), Round Lake, IL 60073.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 510 No. Cedar Lake Road, Round Lake. Friends may visit with the family at church from 9:30 am until the time of service Saturday.
Interment will be private.
