Kenneth D. Zabielski, age 62, of McHenry, died Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1943 in Chicago to Simeon and Harriet (nee Mazurowski) Zabielski, and was raised in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965 and enjoyed parachuting.
On April 20, 1968 he married Paula Marie Rio at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Chicago. Kenneth and Paula Marie moved to McHenry in 1968 and had two children, Kenneth R. and Dawn Marie Zabielski.
Kenneth D. was a plastics engineer who enjoyed research and development of new plastics and products. He received many patents for his work and taught classes at Johnsburg High School and McHenry County College in his spare time. Kenneth retired as a Senior Product Developmental Scientist at Ferro Corporation in Evansville, Indiana in the spring of 2005 and returned to McHenry in July 2005. While working at Ferro Corporation, he traveled extensively in China, Taiwan, Denmark, and Sweden.
Ken enjoyed exploring the technical aspects of everyday life and was gifted in the art of conversation. He also enjoyed fishing and boating on the Fox River. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9167 of St. John the Baptist Church. He was a 4th Degree Knight with Bishop Boylan Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Johnsburg and a member of the American Legion, Lake Region Post # 703 of Fox Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Paula Marie; two children, Kenneth R. (Judith) Zabielski of Antioch, Dawn (the late Dean) Ehrke of Wonder Lake; three grandchildren, Ashley, Alex, and Ajay Ehrke; four brothers, Eugene (Joanne) Zabielski of Louisiana, Robert (Mary Ann) Zabielski of St. Charles, MO, John “Jack” (Ruth) Zabielski of McHenry, Ted (Barbara) Zabielski of Des Plaines; three sisters, Marge (Manus) Kean of Orland Park, Lucille (the late Eugene) Budzinski of Chicago, Jean (Chester) Cybulski of Chicago; a sister-in-law, Barbara Zabielski of Antioch; and many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Sam; his in-laws, Ralph and Anne Rio.
The visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2006, at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 West Elm Street, McHenry, IL 60050. Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Monday prior to leaving for church.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2006, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2302 W. Church Street, Johnsburg. The Rev. Robert Balog will officiate.
