Kenneth J. Spark, age 67, of Spring Grove, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
He was born July 18, 1946 in Dubuque, Iowa to James and Bernice (Bradbury) Spark. After being raised and educated in Dubuque, Ken met his future wife, Donna L. Birch, and they were married on September 28, 1968 in Dubuque.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Ken served aboard the USS Murray and the USS Beatty during the Vietnam War. Because service to his country was a meaningful time in his life, Ken was elated when he was able to attend a 45-year reunion event with his fellow veterans.
Ken furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, receiving a B.S. degree in Science in 1974 and a Masters degree in Science in 1992 from Louis University in Schaumburg.
A resident of McHenry County for the past 32 years, he enjoyed a career as a manufacturing engineer. Most recently employed by Chrysler, he retired in 2008. Previously Ken was employed by Navistar.
Enjoyments during his leisure time included working on his favorite project, his home, as well as gardening and star-gazing. Most importantly, his family always remained his main priority in life.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Donna; son, Chad (Aimee) Spark of Woodstock; a granddaughter, Alex and a grandson, Joseph; and three sisters, Bernice Besler of Elgin, Mary Kay Burton of Dubuque, IA, and Darlene Hedley of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Lawrence.
A Celebration of Life gathering is being planned to take place in Dubuque.
