Ludwig H. Matthiesen Grayslake – Ludwig H. Matthiesen, age 98, of Grayslake, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2006 at Libertyville Manor in Libertyville.
He was born October 18, 1907 in Germany to Andreas and Nominnie Matthiesen. On September 12, 1936 he married Caroline L. Utecht at Bethlehem Church in Chicago.
Ludwig had lived in Round Lake for 43 years before moving to Grayslake where he and his wife lived for seven years before he became a resident at Libertyville Manor. He was employed as a baker and also learned the business of clock repair from his father-in-law. In 1950 he took over his father-in-laws clock repair business, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the German American Club in Antioch, and held a position on the Village Board of Round Lake Beach Planning Commission. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed flowers and especially roses. He was a Cubs fan but enjoyed watching all Chicago sports teams, and the stock market.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Caroline; two sons, Andrew (Audrey) Matthiesen of Oak Brook, Louie (Terry) Matthiesen of Johnsburg; three grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) Matthiesen of Downers Grove, Kyle (Megan) Matthiesen of St. Mary’s, Ga., Amanda Matthiesen of Johnsburg; two great grandchildren, Conrad and Sophia; a daughter-in-law, Lindy Dawson of New Orleans, La.; a sister, Martha Weichellock of Germany; and his daughter-in-law Audrey’s mother, Ellen (the late Hank) Christeon of Hobe Sound, FL.
He was preceded in death by a son Conrad Matthiesen (1970); and his parents.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, October 20, at Justen’s Round Lake Funeral Home, 222 N. Rosedale Court (at Cedar Lake Road), Round Lake, IL.
The funeral service will be at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 20 at the funeral home. The Rev. Lisle Kauffman will officiate.
Inurnment will be private.
