Mark D. Smith, age 51, of Philadelphia, PA, and formerly of McHenry, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, after a 6 month battle with cancer.
Mark was born April 17, 1961 in McHenry to Lester L. and Elizabeth “Betty” (McKean) Smith.
He was a 1979 graduate of McHenry High School-East Campus, and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2000, Mark was employed by North American Publishing Co. (NAPCO) as the technology editor for Printing Impressions magazine. Previously, he was employed by American Printer magazine in Chicago, where he became managing editor. Later, he was the Midwest editor for Micro Publishing News and also managed web sites for Cygnus Publishing.
In his role at NAPCO, he immersed himself in the technologies of both the printing industry and internal processes. His managing editor, Mark Michelson, said “With an acerbic wit and an unflinching eye for detail, Mark’s exacting standards enabled NAPCO to build upon its online brand. Boasting a keen eye for news value, Mark sculpted Today On PIWorld into one of NAPCO’s most powerful products, blending printing, publishing and technology news into a well-rounded offering that spoke to the needs of today’s printing executives.”
Passionate about his work, Mark continued to work despite illness and the effects of chemotherapy treatments. Those he worked with admired his keen wit and brilliant understanding of technical topics in the rapidly evolving field of publishing and printing.
Mark was an avid cyclist. A loving son and a dear brother, his siblings will always treasure the memory of his devotion to their parents.
He is survived by his loving siblings, Edward (Debora) Smith of McHenry, Linda (Robert) Kunz of Fox River Grove, Laura (Bob) Garbacz of Schaumburg, and Craig (Maggie) Smith of Shorewood, WI; 8 nieces and nephews, Devin (Lynnaea), Derek, Dustin, Mary, Graham, Lizzie, Katy, Ali; and a great-nephew, Logan.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty, on May 15, 2003, and his father, Lester, on Sept. 14, 2005.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Inurnment will be in The Church of Holy Apostles Cemetery, McHenry, at a later date.
