Tim Krause left a message on April 7, 2020:
Nancy and family, my heart goes out to you all during this time of transition. Mark as his Priest said during the funeral was larger than life and more than that a giving person. I remember my many visits with all of you over the past 25 years off and on as you have often hosted our students. I usually stayed the night in McHenry. He always insisted that we have a meal in the evening even though it may be at 9pm as he was just finished up for the day. I always felt bad, but the next morning I always reflected on our evening conversation and always put me in a positive mood towards our profession. He will be missed by so many. I am sure that he will be directing Easter plans with the Lord as we await the Resserection this Easter Sunday. With love and friendship, Tim Krause

Mark Jelacic left a message on April 4, 2020:
To The Justen Family, Ii was my pleasure to meet Mark a number of years ago when I was president of WFDA. He was a true asset to funeral service and will be missed by all of his colleagues. We in funeral service spend our lives helping the grieving families we serve, but who helps the funeral director's family when they are coping with the death of a loved one? Know that the entire profession is here for you and that it is OK to call on your friends, if just to talk. My prayers are with you and hope that the day will come soon when your thoughts and memories of Mark will turn from tears of sadness to tears of joy when you think of him. Mrs Henry (Alice) Nulle left a message on April 4, 2020:
To Nancy and family......Mark was a very helpful friend back in 1980 and 1982, when my husband ran for McHenry Co. Sheriff and Hank ended his service to McHenry County upon his retirement in 1986. Here was the young guy going all out for an older guy with the energy of no one I had ever seen before. I remember the big green ? convertible that Mark had and in all the parades and functions. Later in years, I watched his pride in McHenry grow and his endeavors accumulate to new heights. I asked everyone I knew that could vote this last time to vote for Mark in the senior complex where I still live in Woodstock. It is a lonely and new world when your husband dies and the impact it does on your family. My three children talk about their father all the time and the happy and funny memories help us endure the emptiness that will never leave your heart. Hank died in 2007 to lung cancer. You have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. God Bless those that mourn.

At a time like this words can not fully express the way we feel. Mark may have had a rough exterior at times but there was always a good, caring heart inside. He was the kind of person who, if he found you were having troubles, would give you the shirt off of his back. Our hearts go out to his family and the lack of his presence will leave a hole in many lives.

Dr. Mary L Davis left a message on April 3, 2020:
Mark was a valued friend and colleague when I was Superintendent at Round Lake Area School District #116. We also worked together on the Round Lake Chamber Of Commerce as Directors. We went through some very tough times. He did not always agree with the School Board and me . Especially during the long Teachers Strike. No one won that won. And our kids lost the most. But Mark remained very loyal to the community and me. I am devastated to learn we have lost a true , local hero. He accomplished so much.,

To the Justen Family, thank you for sharing Mark with us for all of these years. As you well know many of us looked at him as larger then life. What a guy!! Truly gave from his heart. I will miss his presence and handshake. God Bless and the Lord has a well seasoned FF/trustee at his table helping make decisions. Jim Grady III, retired Frankfort FD, IFCA-ED

I along with a couple of others who have left tributes here was also a former employee of Justen Funeral Homes for a brief period in 1999, and also a Worsham classmate of Nancy's. I must say I am saddened to hear of Mark's untimely passing. Mark was a good mentor and wanted nothing but the best intentions for his employees. Though he could be very opinionated at times he was fair and you always knew where you stood. His love of his community was second to none and it showed in his strife for perfection with every detail with each and every family served. His personality lit up a room when he would enter and no matter what the mood he ALWAYS made you laugh. Nancy, Robbie, Alex, Krista and family, my family and I send our heartfelt prayers and love to you as you not only mourn Mark's untimely passing but celebrate the many accomplishments of his life. Although I can't be with you in person, we will be thinking of you in the days ahead. Thomas (Tom) Luther and family

Also a former employee of Justen Funeral Homes (‘94-‘98) I had no idea I would enter the funeral business before meeting Mark. After spending time during a summer around the “family like” staff at Justen’s, I had a conversation with Mark and the next thing I knew I was enrolled at Worsham and began my apprenticeship at Justen’s. I remained on the staff until marriage and decided to move back to central Illinois to be near family. I am proud to say I am still in the business after 26 years. I owe a great deal of who I am today to the lessons learned working at Justen’s. Nancy and family, I am truly sorry for your loss and wish you only the best during this difficult time. Sincerely, Steve Hall.
