Martha Elizabeth Dignan, age 95, of McHenry, died, Friday, July 20, 2007, at her home.
She was born July 4, 1912 in Chicago to Patrick and Martha (Murtaugh) Regan. In September of 1934, Martha married William “Bud” Dignan, who preceded her in death in 1969. They were married at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Chicago.
She has been a McHenry resident for 40 years, prior to that she was a northsider (Lincoln Park) in Chicago. Martha was employed at Illinois Bell as a clerk/supervisor for over 40 years, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and the Ladies Guild, Telephone Pioneers of America, American Legion Unit 491 of McHenry, and volunteer for the Auxiliary of Northern Illinois Medical Center for over 30 years. Martha volunteered and gave back to the community her whole life. Her charitable contributions read like a Who’s Who of charities.
She is survived by a niece, Patricia (the late Thaddeus) Walter of McHenry; two nephews, John (Diane) Ferwick of Chicago and John (the late Bess) Kordik of Dayton, Ohio; and many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (1969); her parents; and four sisters.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass is celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 3500 W. Washington, McHenry, IL 60050.
Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Evergreen Park on Wednesday.
