Mary E. “Betty” Fenwick, age 79, of McHenry, died Friday, July 21, 2007, at Northern Illinois Medical Center.
She was born August 2, 1927 in Chicago to Charles and Katherine (Flynn) McLaren. On August 6, 1949, she married William P. “Bill” Fenwick, Jr. at Ascension Church in Harvey. Betty was half of a real marriage team.
Born and raised in Chicago and Bourbonnais, Betty was educated in Harvey. She lived in various places throughout her life including, Lansing, IL, Sturgeon Bay, WI, and New Canaan, CT until she moved to McHenry in September 2006.
She was extensively involved with foster care through Catholic Charities and Department of Children and Family Services. She loved babies. Later in life she served as caregiver and companion to the elderly at Porter Keno in Sturgeon Bay. Betty was very active in the Christian Family Movement of the ‘60s in the Catholic Church, she was the host home for the Pilgrim Virgin Mary prayer and rosary group and a sponsor for Vietnamese refugee families in the late 1970s.
Betty was a member of Master Gardeners with her husband and was very involved with church work. She was a fan of craft and cooking magazines. She was hooked on fishing and camping in the second half of her lifetime. She enjoyed “Big Band” music and the Lawrence Welk Show. She had an entrepreneurial spirit, running several “at home” businesses. She loved simple get-togethers with family and friends. She was a devoted mother and doting grandmother.
Survivors include her husband Bill of 57 years; two daughters, Patricia (Robert) Mirich of Cedar Lake, IN and Annette (William) Ross of New Canaan, CT; seven sons, William P. (Ruth) Fenwick III of South Holland, Thomas T. (Janice) Fenwick of McHenry, Bruce R. Fenwick of Westmont, Terrence P. (Darlene) Fenwick of Naperville, Gale R. (Brigitta) Fenwick of Flowery Branch, GA, D. Drew Fenwick of Schaumburg, and Martin T. Fenwick of McHenry; 18 Grandchildren; two brothers, Charles “Ned” (Betsy) McLaren and David (Willa) McLaren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Timmy; a sister, Mary Coxon; and a brother, James F. McLaren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., with a Remembrance Service at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm Street, McHenry, IL 60050.
Visitation will continue on Friday, July 27, from 11 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Rd., McHenry, IL.
