Mary Theresa McCarty, age 80, of Edwardsville and formerly a long time resident of Wonder Lake, died August 27, 2009, at Alden Terrace of Long Grove.
She was born July 4, 1929 in Boston, Mass., to Joseph P. and Mary E. (Regan) Joyce. On June 25, 1955, she married William H. McCarty III at St. Mark’s Church in Dorchester, Mass.
Mary received her B.S. degree from Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass., and her Master’s degree from Boston College. She was an elementary educator for most of her career, with a special concentration on the first grade. She worked for several years in Dedham, Mass., and in Park Forest.
Mary was a longtime member of Christ the King Church in Wonder Lake, and a former member of St. Ann’s Church in Pharr, Texas.
She enjoyed golf, bridge, ceramics, and being active in girl scouts. She was also very involved in church activities, and also taught CCD.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, William III of Holiday Shores; three children, Nancy McCarty of Mundelein, Mary E. (Rhett) Bright of Pekin, Robert P. (Kristi) McCarty of Florissant, Missouri; four grandchildren, Ryan P. McCarty of Pekin, Derek R. McCarty of Bunker Hill, Madison Bright of Pekin, and Baylee Bright of Pekin; and three sisters, Ann (Lawrence) Flaherty of Milton, Mass., Dorothy Joyce of Hingham, Mass., and Helen (Jack) Haughey of Center Ossipee, New Hampshire.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Kevin W. McCarty in 1988; a sister, Virginia M. Joyce; and a brother, Joseph Joyce.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2009 at Justen’s Wonder Lake Funeral Home, 7611 W. Hancock Drive, Wonder Lake. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 5006 E. Wonder Lake Road, Wonder Lake, IL 60097.
Interment will be in Christ the King Cemetery, Wonder Lake.
