Matthew Scherer, age 80, of Lakemoor, died Saturday, Fegbruary 13, 2010 at Centegra Hospital – McHenry.
He was born January 19, 1930 in Chicago to Michael and Anna (Kretchmer) Scherer. On February 11, 1956 he married Betty Harris in Chicago.
Matthew was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War as an airman 1st Class from 1951 to 1955.
He was employed for 25 years as a warehouse manager for Accurate Office Supply.
He was a resident of McHenry for more than 50 years. Matthew had many hobbies throughout his life. He was a writer, purely because he loved to write and share his observations with those around him. He wrote poetry, short stories and a few novels. His poetry was published frequently in the Neighbors Section of the Northwest Herald. He was an accomplished organist and amateur songwriter. He most enjoyed performing at home for his wife, children and grandchildren. Despite his years, he was an accomplished Web surfer, mastering the art of e-mail in order to share jokes, stories and stay in touch with friends and family. He was married to the love of his life for 54 years and he never stopped courting her, enjoying dinner dates with her every week around McHenry at their favorite spots. He will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife Betty; three children, Michael (Eileen) Scherer of Wonder Lake, Peter Scherer of Sarasota, FL., Mary (Scott) Christensen of Stillman Valley; five grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth and James Scherer, Aaron and Amy Effler; two sisters, Marion Scherer of Chicago, Marie Teal of St. Charles; and two brothers, Paul M. Scherer of Chicago, Peter Scherer of Lake Geneva, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, Il 60050.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, at the funeral home.
Inurnment will be private.
