Continue ReadingMerwyn M. “Merv” Schmitt, age 90, of McHenry, passed away on January 7, 2019 at Burr Oak Manor in Genoa City. He was born on February 27, 1928 to John and Catherine (Freund) Schmitt in McHenry. On November 12, 1949, he married his life’s love, Gladys B. Burnell, in Elgin.
In 1946, Merv enlisted in the United States Army and bravely served his country. He remained a proud World War II Veteran for his lifetime. By trade, he was an auto mechanic and worked at Buss Ford for over forty years before his retirement.
An avid baseball fan, Merv formed the McCullom Lake Little League and coached his own team within the league. On the professional level, Merv loyally cheered on his favorite team, the Chicago White Sox. In his free time, Merv enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his dear family.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his children, Michael (Diane) Schmitt of Grayslake, Catherine Jensen of Peoria, Robert (Patricia) Schmitt of McHenry, Diane (Jim) Hahn of McHenry, Linda (Dale) Moll of Mchenry, and Janine (Chris) Hopp of Johnsburg; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Dorothy Pitzen of McHenry.
In addition to his parents, Merv was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; a granddaughter, Kallie Hahn; his siblings, Lorraine (Gene) Frost and Harold (Elaine) Schmitt; and brothers-in-law, Victor Bassi and Ted Pitzen.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Rd., McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation resumes the following morning at the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. after which we will leave for the funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1407 N. Richmond Rd, McHenry.
Interment will be in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association at 8430 W. Bryn Mawr Ave, Ste. 800, Chicago, IL 60631.
