Michael J. Kalfus Sr., age 91, of McHenry, died October 16, 2006.
He was born August 21, 1915 in Chicago to Frank and Francis Kalfus. On December 23, 1941, he married Katherine “Kay” Peterson in Chicago.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WWII with General Patton’s Third Army, 95th Infantry, 795th Ordnance Company in the European Theater.
He was a resident of McHenry since 1950. Employed by Community Auto Supply in the 50’s and 60’s, he enjoyed a close and lasting friendship with the store’s owner, Sigmund Strach. From 1968 until 2002, he often traveled to Florida, where he maintained dual residency for much of that time. He was an avid pinochle player, and also enjoyed fishing and an interest in cars.
Survivors include three children, Pam (Michael) Ahlgrim of Oregon, Michael Jr. (Gay) Kalfus of McHenry and Anita (Robert) Mathews of Wadsworth; six grandchildren, Denise (Andrew) Kopp, Brian (Lynn) Ahlgrim, Ann Marie Mathews, Robert Mathews III, Stacy (James) Doughty, and Melissa Kalfus; four great grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew Kopp, Briana and Brandon Ahlgrim.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; a brother and three sisters, and many friends.
Services were private for the family. Memorials to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Avenue, Barrington, IL 60010 would be appreciated by the family.
