Norbert J. Roper, age 81, of Wonder Lake, died Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at his home in Wonder Lake.
He was born March 4, 1929 in Chicago to Forde and Marie (DeFontaine) Roper.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War as a staff Sergeant. He was employed as a retail clerk for many years at Jewel Foods in St. Charles and Chicago. After Jewel he found employment with Dominick Foods where he worked for seventeen years in the Crystal Lake, Palatine, East Dundee and Lake Zurich stores before retiring. During his employment with Dominick Foods he was a board member of U.F.C.W. representing his fellow workers.
Norbert was a longtime resident of the Lake In The Hills, Algonquin and Woodstock areas where he attended St. Margaret Mary Church in Algonquin. At age 70 he accomplished receiving his motorcycle riding license taking a class at McHenry County College. He also built and flew remote airplanes, enjoyed photography and was an avid computer enthusiast.
Survivors include his seven children, Jean Roper of Overland Park, Kansas, Anne (Jim) Hudzinski of Rockton, Patricia (Frank) Sciluffo of Wonder Lake, Nancy (Tim) Redmond of Wonder Lake, Karen Roper of Overland Park, Kansas, Victoria (Mark) Schneiderman of Union, David (Jodi) Roper of Carpentersville; nineteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Marge) Roper of Davenport, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June on March 1, 1975; a granddaughter, Rebecca in 1981; his parents; a brother, Thomas Roper; and a sister, Jean Roper.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, December 27, 2010, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, Il 60050. There will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. with his son-in-law, Deacon Jim Hudzinski officiating.
Visitation will continue on Tuesday, December 28, from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral Mass on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at St. Margaret Mary Church, 111 S. Hubbard Street, Algonquin, Il 60102.
Interment will be in Algonquin Cemetery, Algonquin.
