Philip W. Coatar, age 76, of McHenry, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.
He was born January 23, 1932 in Chicago to Philip G. and Margaret (Rolfsman) Coatar. On August 20, 1960, he married Loretta D. Sheffner at St. Bernadette Church in Evergreen Park.
Formerly of Oak Forest, where he was a 23 year employee of Whiting Corporation in Harvey, Philip moved to McHenry in 1979. He was an 18 year employee of Scot Forge of Spring Grove, and was Vice President of Purchasing, retiring in 1997. While residing in Oak Forest, he was a member of St. Damian’s Church. He was very active in the booster club and the athletic department, especially with basketball, baseball, and the girls’ softball program, which he started.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in McHenry, the McHenry Moose Lodge 691, and also was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Oak Forest. He was a 28 year member of the McHenry Rotary Club, where he held the position of past treasurer.
He enjoyed traveling, especially cruises to Europe as well as Florida vacations. He was a proud father and a doting “papa”.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Loretta; three daughters, Christine (David) Paro of Clarendon Hills, Jean (Andreas) Antoniou of Hinsdale, and Karen (Donald) Spohr of Spring Grove; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Alexandra, Jill, Andrea, Andrew, Meagan, Aaron, Mary Kate, and Mia; two sisters, Shirley (the late Richard) Brennan of Clarendon Hills, and Patricia (Philip) Lake of Palos Heights; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm Street, McHenry, IL 60050. Visitation will resume on Wednesday, January 30, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, 3500 W. Washington Street, McHenry, IL 60050.
Inurnment will be in St. Patrick’s Churchyard Cemetery.
