Renata Freida Kutil, age 88, died Friday, January 18, 2013, at Hospice of Northeastern Illinois in Barrington.
She was born November 22, 1924 in Germany to Max and Freida Labuda. In 1925, she immigrated at 9 months of age to the U.S. through Ellis Island. She and her family eventually settled in Woonsocket, SD, where she graduated from high school as valedictorian with the class of 1942.
She met her future husband, Les, and they dated for seven years before they married. During that time, Renata decided to pursue nursing studies while Les was drafted and served in the Air Force. Serious about attending a nursing school with an excellent reputation, Renata moved to Chicago and received her nurse’s training at Michael Reese Hospital. During her last three months of training, Renata worked in Cambridge, OH, at Cambridge Army Hospital.
After the war ended, Renata and Les married on July 7, 1946 in Woonsocket. During their first year of marriage, Renata found herself teaching first and second grade as a substitute teacher, replacing the regular teacher who had contracted polio. She later worked as a registered nurse at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN for many years. She and her husband retired in 1984 and settled in Big Stone City, South Dakota to enjoy retirement. They lived there for 26 years spending this time among wonderful friends, fishing, gardening and enjoying a lifestyle we wish we could emulate. In 2011, she relocated to live in Lake Barrington, IL.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Greg) Bennett; three grandchildren, Casey (Chris) Haan, Brian (Heather) Bennett, and Erin White; five great-grandchildren, Briana, Matthew, Max, Emma and Megan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Leslie, on July 12, 2012; one brother and two sisters.
Visitation and services were private for family.
Memorials are suggested by her family to St. Charles Catholic Church, 106 3rd Avenue, Big Stone City, South Dakota or to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, Pepper Family Hospice Home, 405 Lake Zurich Road, Barrington, IL 60010.
