Richard S. “Dick” Blundell, age 78, of McHenry, died Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He was born August 22, 1927, in Cleveland , OH to Nelson and Clara (Pearsall) Blundell. After high school, he entered the U.S. Navy V5 program. He graduated in 1945 from West Tech. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Richard then served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed at Hickham Air Force Base in Honolulu, HI. He attained the rank of Second Lieutenant.
On September 20, 1981, he was united in marriage to Beverly Hansen at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, McHenry. In 1965, Richard and his family moved to McHenry from Hoffman Estates, and he began working as a pilot for United Airlines. He retired after 33 years as the number one DC-8 Captain from United Airlines in 1987. Richard was a founding member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and the Men’s Prayer group. He volunteered for Home of the Sparrow, and received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1995. He was also a Meals on Wheels driver for many years, and was a member of the Retired United Pilots Association (RUPA), as well as the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA). Richard enjoyed woodworking, and was an avid baseball fan.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly of McHenry; his daughter, Linda (Ray) Dearmon of Edgemont, AR; his son, James Blundell of Charlottesville, VA; two step-daughters, Cheryl (Scott) Dawson of Crystal Lake, and Lorie (John) Englert of Crystal Lake; six grandchildren, Lisa Poulin of Sibley, LA, Pfc.Shana Poulin, currently serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq, Eric and Alec Dawson of Crystal Lake, Marisa and Samantha Englert of Crystal Lake.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nelson Blundell, his mother, Clara Makowski, and his step-father, Paul Makowski.
Visitation will be Friday, January 27, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry IL 60050.
Visitation will continue Saturday, January 28, from 10:30 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. funeral service at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 N. Green St., McHenry, IL.
Interment will be in Woodland Cemtery.
