Ronald E. Barwig, age 80, of McHenry, died Thursday, October 13, 2011, at his home. He was born Feb. 1, 1931 in Chicago to Edward and Eleanor (Gonia) Barwig.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served from 1952-1956 during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Corporal and was the recipient of a Purple Heart medal.
A resident of McHenry since 1962, he was employed as a ComEd shift engineer for over 35 years, prior to retiring in 1989. He was a charter member of the McHenry Area Rescue Squad from its inception in 1972.
Mr. Barwig was a member of The Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry, where he was a member of the Stewardship Committee. He was also a volunteer for FISH and Meals on Wheels.
An avid fisherman, Ron enjoyed fishing on the Fox River and on the waterways of Wisconsin, as well as deep sea fishing. Other enjoyments included boating and traveling. He traveled to Europe and toured WWII historical places and battle sites. He was one of McHenry’s biggest John Wayne fans. His family will fondly remember Ron’s dedication to hosting all family get-togethers.
Survivors include his children, William (Barbara) Barwig of Beach Park, Suzanne Taylor of Rockford, Donna Barwig of Houston, TX, Barbara (Hunter Paul) Davidson of Chicago, Michael (Paulette) Shannon of Eagle River, Alaska, Debra (Patrick) Murphy of Vista, CA, and Kenneth (Mary) Shannon of McHenry; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Judith (Ray) Widhalm of McHenry.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edith; his second wife, Evelyn; and a daughter, Deborah.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
Visitation will resume Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Holy Apostles, McHenry.
Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, McHenry.
