Russell Lawrence Crossley, age 85, of Lakemoor and formerly of Cary, died Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Hospice of Northeastern Illinois in Woodstock.
He was born August 3, 1926 in Chicago to Ralph L. and Marie C. (McSweeney) Crossley. On October 25, 1980 he married Josephine M. Gorr.
Russell was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII.
He had been a resident of Cary since 1980. He had been employed as a firefighter for the City of Chicago, Engine 11, for 23 years, retiring in November of 1980.
After retirement he volunteered at the Kraus Senior Center in Cary for the Salvation Army Golden Dinners for 30 years. He was a member of AMVETS Post 245 of Cary. He was an avid golfer, NASCAR fan and loved watching the game show network.
He is survived by his wife Josephine; six children, Larry Crossley of Chicago, Steve Crossley of North Carolina, Danny (Gloria) Crossley of Cary, Russ Crossley of Chicago, Teri (Alan) Atchison of Cary, Kevin Crossley of Bloomingdale; two step-children, Linda (Terry) Allison of Ft. Myers, FL., Rick (Chris) Sommers of Cary; many grandchildren; many many great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Char (Keith) Achuff of Berwyn; a niece, Kim; and a nephew, Eric.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty on October 9, 1979; and his parents.
There was no visitation and service was private for the family.
Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove.
