Shirley Jean Gariffa, age 74, of Johnsburg, died Saturday, August 30, 2014. She was born March 5, 1940 in Chicago to James and Adeline (Stenson) Garrity. On April 25, 1959, she married George T. Gariffa at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Chicago.
A 23 year resident of Pistakee Lake, Shirley formerly lived in Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg, and Palatine. For the past five years, she also spent her winters in The Villages, Florida.
Shirley was the proprietor of a beauty salon in Schaumburg for six years. She also worked as a procurement officer for Northrup Grumman Corporation for several years.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, George; two daughters, Darlene ( Thomas) Kotovsky and Janice (Scott) Ringa; three grandchildren, Tommy ( Dana Perina) Kotovsky, Lindsay Ringa, and Sean Ringa; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Ronnie, Brianna, Kayla; two sisters, Arlene (the late Santo) Abbinati and Carol (the late Melvin) Ellenbecker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Crystal Kotovsky in 2011; and two sisters, Dorothy and Janice.
Friends are invited to join Shirley’s family at a gathering to celebrate Shirley’s life from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at the Cary Country Club, 2400 Grove Lane, Cary, IL 60013. At 1:30 p.m., a formal time of reflection and sharing of memories will take place.
