Sister Eleanor King S.S.S.F., age 90, of Cambellsport, WI and formerly of McHenry, died peacefully with the Lord Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Ruth Hospice in West Allis, Wisconsin.
She was born August 24, 1923 to Joe and Lena (Miller) King on the family farm in Johnsburg. After graduating from St. John’s School, she worked for a few years prior to moving to Milwaukee to join the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1943.
Sister Eleanor began her ministry of homemaking at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent in Omaha, NE. She was also assigned to Saint Mathias in Chicago, and helped to open a mission in Walls, Mississippi. When Sister Eleanor was assigned to the Diocese of Rockford, she served as homemaker at St. Joseph Convent in Richmond (1956-1963), at St. John the Baptist Convent in Johnsburg (1963-1969), at Bishop Lane Retreat House in Rockford (1969-1970), and at St. John the Baptist Convent (1970-1973).
At St. Mary’s in McHenry, Sister Eleanor served as sacristan and provided pastoral care to the sick and homebound of the parish. After serving at St. Mary’s for 23 years, the School Sisters of St. Francis’s mission closed at St. Mary’s after 111 years of operation on June 30th, 2006, and Sister Eleanor retired to live with her fellow School Sisters, first in Campbellsport, Wisconsin and most recently in Milwaukee, WI at St. Francis Villa.
Sister Eleanor recently celebrated 70 years of serving the Lord, and stated she was happy and grateful to God for his great love throughout the years, and grateful to those that she was able to help and serve.
Sister Eleanor is survived by nieces and nephews, Robert (Rosalie) smith of Spring Grove, Nanci Piccony of McHenry, Lloyd (Patty) Smith of Schaumburg, Harry (Lynn) King of Brownsville, WI, Donna Schaefer of McHenry, and Tom King of McHenry; her best friend, Joan “Mazzie” Buss; her first cousins; many great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Leo (the late Mae) King; her sisters, Mabel (the late Leo) Smith and Sally Benson-King; her nephew, Ted Schaefer; nephews-in-law, Tom McAuliff and Raymond Piccony; great niece, Kimberly Smith-Quinn; and great-nephews, Dan and Ron Schaefer.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Her family suggests memorials be made to the School Sisters of St. Francis, 1501 S. Layton Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53215.
