Virginia H. Richmond, age 83, of McHenry, died Thursday, July 2, 2015, at Lexington Health Care in Lake Zurich.
Virginia was born June 4, 1932 in Detroit, MI, to Douglas and Helen (Craig) Dowdney.
A resident of McHenry since 1981, she previously lived in Crystal Lake and also Toledo, Ohio. Virginia was a graduate of the University of Toledo, receiving a bachelor’s degree in education. She furthered her education at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, where she earned a Master of Science in Education in Special Education.
Virginia first taught second grade in Toledo. After moving to Illinois, she was employed by SEDOM in the special education field and specialized in early childhood education. She was employed there for over 30 years before she retired in 2002.
Virginia especially looked forward to summertime, when she was able to spend the entire summer traveling in a travel trailer and camping at various campgrounds throughout the United States. For six years, she was a campground worker and also served as a camp host. Other enjoyments included reading, knitting, crocheting, and walking and hiking.
Survivors include three children, Cheryl (Paul) Walker, Laura (John) Levy, and Douglas (Kathleen) Richmond; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth (Re’Lou) Dowdney; and her special friend and family, Dottie Thurlwell, Dottie’s children, Tammy Gitzke, Bonnie (Russ) Oziminski, Vickie Thurlwell, Wendy (Dave) Michels, and Debbie (Linda) Florek, Dottie’s two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Friends may visit with her family from 11 a.m. until noon Friday, July 10, 2015, at Mount Hope Methodist Church, 1015 W. Broadway Street, Johnsburg (Pistakee Highlands), IL 60051. The memorial service will follow visitation at noon at the church. Inurnment will be private.
