William August Mielke, age 81, of Round Lake Park, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at his home.
He was born the youngest of two children on May 30, 1926 in Chicago to William and Clara (Eisenstrant) Mielke. He served in the U. S. Navy from Sept. 30, 1943 until he received an honorable discharge on April 6, 1946. He married Lee in 1947.
He made his living doing auto body repair work in the area until around 1990, after which time he would tinker in his garage making fishing lures. He was known in the Lake County area for his many hobbies, such as fishing, hunting, horse shoes, and playing pool. In 2006, he was “Angler of the Year” in a local fishing club, which was accomplished from the back of fellow club members boats in tournaments at the age of 80.
He will be remembered for his kindness, always taking time out for anyone who would ask for help, or a child at the local pond by his house that was having trouble with a fishing pole or catching fish. He often pointed out that if a kid was taught to hunt and fish, they would not have time for trouble.
He is survived by three sons, Keith “Rocky” (Susan) Mielke of South Carolina, Jimmy (Kimberly) Mielke of Round Lake Beach, and Donny (Michelle) Mielke of Round Lake Beach; seven grandchildren, Gary, Pat, Marty, Michele, Jamie, Mike and Kenny; many great grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian. All of his family will miss him very much. Our family would like to thank Nina Matthias for the kindness she has shown our father for the past twenty-one years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Lee; and a son Dicky in 1974.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the 7:30 p.m. memorial service on Saturday, November 17, 2007, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Round Lake. The Rev. Lisle Kauffman will officiate.
Inurnment will be private.
