William F. “Bud” Meyers, age 85, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Crystal Lake surrounded by his family.
He was born July 23, 1920 in Johnsburg to William and Margaret (King) Meyers. On August 24, 1946 he married Leona Smith at St. John the Baptist Church in Johnsburg.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII earning 3 Bronze Battle Stars. Bud was a life long resident of Johnsburg.
In his youth he was a short stop for the Johnsburg Tigers baseball team and a great hitter. He worked as a carpenter with R & D Thiel. Bud was instrumental in starting the first McHenry County Johnsburg volunteer rescue squad. He also started a retirees rescue squad group who organize and deliver food baskets for needy families in Johnsburg at Thanksgiving. He is a member of the American Legion Post 491, and a member of St. John the Baptist Church.
Bud enjoyed gardening, making concrete flower pots and playing bingo. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandy (Tom) Johnson of Wonder Lake; two grandchildren, Michelle ( David) Krofel of Wauconda, Michael (Shannon) Deubel of McHenry; two brothers, Elmer (Bonnie) Meyers of Johnsburg, LeRoy (Esther) Meyers of McHenry; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Leona (Nov. 2, 1989); a son William “Billy” F. Meyers Jr. (July 30, 1988); two sister’s, Annabelle Freund, Laura Meyers; and his parents.
Visitation will be from 3 pm until 8 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2006 at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 West Elm Street, McHenry.
The funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at St. John the Baptist Church, 2302 W. Church St., Johnsburg, Il.
Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Johnsburg.
